The 1859 Prize of the French Academy had three entries. They were from Bour, Bonnet and Codazzi. All three pieces of work are important but, although that of Bour and Bonnet were published fairly soon after being submitted, Codazzi's work was not published until 1883 (10 years after his death).
Codazzi's submission for the prize contained formulas which proved important in the theory of surfaces. Bonnet used Codazzi's formulas to prove the existence theorem in the theory of surfaces.
Codazzi also published on isometric lines, geodesic triangles and the stability of floating bodies.
